You probably thought this would be Stefan Wisniewski, right? Three-year starter at center/guard, 2008 team member, Academic All-American, All Big Ten, second round draft pick, NFL All-Rookie team, blah blah blah. Nope. But we are going with another WPIAL product, Pete Schoderbek.
Pete played Long Guard from 1951 - 1953 for the Nittany Lions at venerable Beaver Field, when it seated approximately 23,000 on some bleachers, near present day Rec Hall. Pete made his mark in the trenches while measuring in at 5' 11", and 184 lbs. In other words, Pete was a average-sized human, and would likely have to play DB or WR today, instead of Guard. The 1953 Lions finished 6-3 on the season under head coach Rip Engle, with victories over Boston U, Syracuse, TCU, Fordham, Rutgers, and on November 21st, they capped the season with a 17-0 shutout of Pitt. The three losses were to Wisconsin, UPenn, and #5 West Virginia, by a close 19-20 score.
