The Tale:
If someone had told you two weeks ago, that a defensive lineman would commit to Penn State other than Thomas Holley, Ricky Walker, or Derrick Nnadi, you probably would have been confused. Antoine White didn't pick up his Penn State offer until June 22. The staff invited him to camp on the 22nd, but he wasn't able to make it up on such short notice. Vandy didn't let this stop him however, as he called and extended a scholarship offer later in the day after the camp ($). White immediately counted Penn State as one of his top options. He took an unofficial visit on June 29th, and here we are on July 1st, with Antoine giving O'Brien and his staff his word to wear to blue and white.
Outlook:
As many of you have pointed out as this class has been shaping up, there was clearly a void where there should be a defensive lineman. Well no longer. The main thing I noticed while watching White's tape was his ability to get to the QB. He seemed to line up at end more than once in the video (Although it is filled with highlights from his sophomore year). For him to properly walk in the footsteps of the most recent PSU DT stars, he'll need to put some weight. However, I'm sure Fitzgerald will work his magic, and mold him into whatever O'Brien and Johnson desire.
By the time White enrolls at PSU, the only other scholarship DT's will be Kyle Baublitz, Derek Dowrey, Brian Gaia, Austin Johnson, and Tyrone Smith. Johnson loves to use constant rotation with his DT's, and it looks like White will have every opportunity to get in that mix early. His pass rushing abilities could certainly help him get early playing time, as any compliment to the pass rushing abilities our line already possesses, could be deadly for opposing QB's. I'm going to try and get in touch with Antoine soon for an interview, and hopefully that will help shed more light on how Penn State plans on using him.
Antoine brings the current class to 13, leaving 2 more available spots.
Welcome to Penn State, Antoine!
