With Anthony Fera's departure to Texas, Butterworth was thrust into the starting punter job for O'Brien's first year as head coach. He certainly showed he has it within himself to be a true weapon on special teams, busting out multiple punts of over 50 yards throughout the season. He also placed more than a few punts inside the 10, thanks to some help from his gunners.
The Indianapolis native is entering his senior season, after starting off as a walk on, but later earning a scholarship from the staff. It's very easy to look at members of special teams, and only see their flaws. Their good work often goes unnoticed, and this is definitely the case with Alex. If the Lions are to continue their successful ways, they need to continue to get good contributions from all of the members of special teams, especially their punter (Although a little more than last year sure couldn't hurt either).
Good luck this season, Alex!
