Ed: Bumped because #DoWorkCael. Should have been bumped over the weekend, but I was out of town and who reads BSD on the weekends anyway? My bad, yo. --CG
It's official! The most-anticipated HS recruit since David Taylor is now a Lion.
Chance Marsteller receiving the PA AAA Outstanding Wrestler Award.
For those unfamiliar with his credentials -- meaning those who don't follow wrestling at all:
- The #1 HS wrestler in the country at any age/weight for the past 2 years.
- Undefeated in HS, and not for lack of competition. He was won the biggest in-season and off-season tournaments in the country.
- 3x PA champ at 152 and 160 lb. Barring injury, he's a lock in March to become the 11th 4x PA champ ever, and easily the heaviest (until fellow PSU commit Thomas Haines takes the mat later that night).
- Twice he beat a returning PA champ by major decision (8+ points) in the state final. This year he beat the OH state champ by tech fall (15+ points) -- in 2:20.
- Tested only once by a HS wrestler -- at the finals of last year's prestigious Powerade Tournament, when he moved up to face the #1-ranked 170 in the nation, PA 3x champ Cody Wiercioch in an epic OT match. This was the HS equivalent of the Taylor-Dake national final, except both guys wrestled.
- World Team member.
- Placed at the Nittany Lion Open -- as an 8TH GRADER. The NCAA has since prohibited HS wrestlers from competing at college opens.
So, yeah, he can wrestle a little. Chance, welcome to Penn State!
To recap the Class of 2014 to date:
- #1 Chance Marsteller, Kennard Dale HS, PA. #1 at 160. 3x PA champ.
- #4 Nick Nevills, Clovis HS, CA. #1 at 285. 2x CA champ.
- #6 Thomas Haines, Solanco HS, PA. #2 at 220. 3x PA champ.
Cael has now landed two Top 5 national recruits in a week. What's he gonna do next week to top this?
