A source has told ESPN's Nittany Nation writer Josh Moyer that true freshman Christian Hackenberg will get the start for Penn State over sophomore JUCO transfer Tyler Ferguson when they take on Syracuse from MetLife Stadium tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. (ABC/ESPN2).
Coach Bill O'Brien has yet to publicly announce a starter, much like his opponent across the sidelines, Syracuse coach Scott Shafer. As recently as this Tuesday's press conference, BOB said that both quarterbacks had been performing extraordinarily well all camp long. On a weekly radio show appearance on Thursday night, he finally did give a bit of information, saying that the team knew who would be starting against the Orange. The premise that both quarterbacks would play, regardless of who starts, has been talked about O'Brien since the middle of camp, though.
The last true freshman to start for Penn State was Rob Bolden in 2010. Before that, you had to go back 100 years to Shorty Miller to find the last quarterback to start the first game of his college career for the Nittany Lions.
