Former Foes: Week 3

Do you have short term memory loss?  Do you want to impress your friends with detailed knowledge of all the teams on Penn State's schedule?  Do you remember Syracuse?  BSD gives you Former Foes: a look back at the teams Penn State already played.

We tend to look at each game in a vacuum, the outcome each week is scrutinized with only the knowledge we had coming into the game.  Sometimes teams look better than we thought at the end of the season, sometimes they look worse.  That's why Former Foes has you covered.

So, how is Syracuse doing?

Syracuse (1-2)

Beat Wagner (1-2) 54-0

What's a good remedy for when you're suffering from the pain of a 0-2 start?  FCS Wagner, of course.  Syracuse scored 5 touchdowns in the first half and cruised to a shutout.  ‘Cuse quarterback Tarrel Hunt threw for 265 yards and 3 touchdowns while completing a ridiculously efficient 15 of 18 passes.  Orange starter Drew Allen ran the first three series but could only manage 3 points.  In came Hunt and the rest was history.  Jarrod West caught five balls for 147 yards and a score, and Jerome Smith ran for two touchdowns.

Wagner was completely overmatched managing only 87 yards total for the game and only 5 first downs while turning the ball over 3 times.  The closest Wagner came to scoring was late in the 4^th.  Wagner started on their own 35 and drove to the Syracuse 19 yard line but the drive ended when running back Dominique Williams was stuffed on 4^th and 1.

Next up: Tulane (2-1)

Eastern Michigan (1-2)

Lost to Rutgers (2-1) 28-10

Eastern outgained Rutgers 373-274 and nearly doubled them in first downs (21-12) but Rutgers dialed up several big plays and relied on the running of Paul James (21 carries, 192 yards, 3 TD).  Eastern kept the game close with a 43-yard touchdown pass by QB Tyler Benz to Ryan Brumfield nearing the half to make it 14-10 Rutgers at the break.  But James had a touchdown run of 55 yards in the third and 52 yards in the 4^th to outpace the Eagles.  James was so dominate that backup quarterback Chas Dodd, who entered the game in the 1^st when starting QB Gary Nova went down, only threw 9 passes all game.

Special teams was also a disaster for EMU.  Kicker Dylan Mulder missed two makeable field goals and Eastern gave up a 99 yard kickoff return to Quron Pratt in the first quarter.
