Blue Liner Notes: ACHA Teams Get Underway

So, here's the deal. Between work and grad classes, I'm just not going to have time to write out full hockey posts for this semester. Maybe the Spring, too. We'll see. All the same, I wanted to provide you with a quick run of scores, notes, updates, and schedules from all of our talented hockey teams at University Park. (And to provide the awesome BSD writers some time to figure out a dedicated writer for at least the Men's D1 team.) As always, I'm open to requests for format changes or things you want to see added to the mix - speak up and I can see how to incorporate what you'd like to see!

NCAA D1 Men:

  • Weekend Results: Idle
  • Standings: 0-0-0
  • Notes: Nothing much to report as of yet. From the recent run of media days, the team looks to have better scoring depth, crazy-good goaltending depth, and a top-flight arena that fans and players alike are going to love.
  • Upcoming Schedule: The season opener/home opener is, if you haven't heard, October 11th, as the Nittany Lions open the 2013-14 campaign against the Army Black Knights. It's just the Friday night game, but that also happens to be Homecoming/Michigan weekend, so it should be an exciting atmosphere to open the season!

NCAA D1 Women:

  • Weekend Results: Idle
  • Standings: 0-0-0
  • Notes: Like the men's team, nothing much new to report as of yet. Team looks to be deeper, more physical, and with the same awesome goaltending we saw last season. Oh, and two seasons in and Coach Brandwene has apparently developed a pipeline called "Minnetonka HS". If you're going to be getting hockey players, Minnesota's not a bad place to be choosing from.
  • Upcoming Schedule: The women open their season on the road this coming weekend, traveling to Vermont to take on the Catamounts. This is the second straight season the ladies have opened the season at Vermont, with the two teams splitting the opening series (5-3, 3-1)

ACHA D2 Ice Lions:

  • Weekend Results: Ice Lions - 6 @ IUP - 1; IUP - 2 @ Ice Lions - 8
  • Standings: 2-0-0
  • Notes: The Ice Lions opened their season with a home-and-home set with IUP, and the Ice Lions look ready to start rolling from the start. Creek Lewis scored a hat trick in the first game, helping propel PSU to a 6-1 win at IUP. The next night, the teams travelled to Happy Valley, and the physicality ramped up. Once the dust settled from the big hits and slew of penalties, the Ice Lions found themselves on the right side of 8-2 scoreline, outscoring IUP in the 2nd period, 5-1. It's early in the season, but the team looks poised for yet another run at the ACHA Championship.
  • Upcoming Schedule: With nobody using the home ice, the Ice Lions welcome MACHA North foes St. Joe's (10/4) and Temple (10/5) to the Pegula Ice Arena. It should be another set of enjoyable games, so if you are going to be near campus, go check out the new arena and some quality hockey.

  • Weekend Results: Liberty - 0 @ WIHC - 6; Liberty - 0 @ WIHC - 7
  • Standings: 2-0-0
  • Notes: To start, the Penn State Women's Ice Hockey Club technically opened the Pegula Ice Arena on Friday, playing the first major games at the PIA - on the community rink. It's a small thing, but it's worthy of the mention.

As for the games, this just wasn't even fair. Looking to set the tone for the season, the WIHC came out firing on all cylinders Friday night, completely outplaying Liberty to the tone of a 72-4 shot advantage. Not silly enough? Then how about following that up with a 82-3 shot advantage the next night. Devon Fisk kept doing her "goal scoring" thing, defender Jackie Saideh added 3 goals, and freshman Geneva Wagoner added 4 points (2G-2A) on the weekend to make her mark. Captain Carly Szyszko added 4 assists, and goalies Sarah Eisenhut and Katie Vaughn stopped all 7 total shots they saw. Ok, so that last stat isn't as impressive, but still - the goalies need a mention in back-to-back shutouts.
  • Upcoming Schedule: With a fuller schedule than last year, the WIHC won't have to wait a month before their next set of games. The ladies are on the road in two weeks to take on a talented Cal (PA) squad.
