One of the greatest television series of this generation ended last night, and we'll honor Futurama with its selection as today's musical accompaniment.
- For someone who started his college career as a walk-on, making it into a game is a pretty solid first goal to set. After that, aim higher, to becoming a starter. Keep at that for a year or two, and maybe, just maybe, you'll hope to get a look in a training camp as an undrafted free agent, if only to spend a few more weeks playing football before the inevitable roster cutdown. But somehow, none of those rules applied to Matt McGloin. Not only did he make the Raiders active roster over fourth-round pick and All-SEC QB Tyler Wilson, but now there are rumblings that some in the organization actually want him, not Terrelle Pryor, under center in Indianapolis on Sunday. We'll note that McGloin looked exceptional in the preseason, and that Terrelle Pryor is a mopey arm-punter. Unfortunately, Oakland isn't too country for anyone. Give 'em hell, Matt.
- McGloin's actually one of a whopping 25 former Nittany Lions who survived final cuts to make NFL rosters; unfortunately, that list doesn't include fullback Michael Robinson, who was cut by Seattle. Some of the names, true longshots, remind you just how hard it is to fill a roster, not only did guys like Derek Moye, Nate Stupar, and Johnnie Troutman find NFL homes, but so too did Brett Brackett and Andrew Sczcerba. Tonight's season kickoff, between Baltimore and Denver, features just one ex-Penn Stater, Ravens backup center A.Q. Shipley.
- With depth issues looming large, Penn State's had to rely on versatility and flexibility from its depleted roster, and nobody embodies that more than Garry Gilliam. But the shift from tight end to tackle, and with it, no future opportunity to catch passes, isn't that big a deal to him.
Quick hitters: a Pennsylvania court ruled against the NCAA, in determining that State Senator Jake Corman's lawsuit to keep Penn State's fine money in state can continue ... Going to the game on Saturday? Don't forget Penn State's new bag policy. ... Oh, and Christian Hackenberg is the starter moving forward, because someone actually asked BOB that.
