Oh, Hello: OH OL Chance Sorrell Commits to Penn State

It took James Franklin all of 5 hours following his introductory press conference to flip one of his former Vanderbilt commits.

The Tale:

He's a new name to Penn State, and the few Vanderbilt football blogs don't seem to cover recruiting so heavily, so this part's going to be thin. Chance Sorrell had been one of the earliest Vanderbilt commits to this year's class, jumping on board to join James Franklin's program towards the beginning of last summer. He had shown no signs of wavering until this evening, when he simultaneously decommitted from Vandy and then followed Franklin to Penn State.

Considering how influential Vanderbilt OL coach Herb Hand certainly was to Sorrell's recruitment, this is as good a sign as any that he will join Franklin's staff at Penn State--he had been buzzed about as a candidate to replace him at Vandy--which is a very, very good thing for the Nittany Lions.

Outlook:

Sorrell was a bit of a tweener in high school: his weight is listed anywhere from 245 to 263 pounds, and he was originally listed as a TE/DE. It looks like he played those positions in high school (that's where all his highlight videos have him), but most recruiting services acknowledge the inevitability that he will continue to grow into a lineman's body. Considering that Penn State has been looking to fill out this class with lineman--as only Noah Beh and unheralded Chasz Wright play the line in this 2014 class--adding another body is a positive. Sorrell will likely need a couple years to bulk up, but appears to have the athleticism to play anywhere, and the frame to grow into an excellent lineman.

Perhaps more immediately, Sorrell's commitment signals a willingness for Franklin to hit the ground running at Penn State, and to look to fill any existing needs in the 2014 class quickly and decisively and with names mined from his previous stint at Vanderbilt. As if the Commodore fans needed another reason to be bitter.
