Thank you seniors!
Penn State used 4 pins and 2 tech falls to beat over-matched Clarion 43 -3 in front of a sold out Rec Hall. Penn State once again won the takedown battle 24-4 and it was the second time this season that the Lions managed 4 pins. The entire dual was over in less than 1 1/2 hours.
125: | #2 Nico Megaludis PSU | tech fall | Hunter Jones CUP, | 21-5 (TF; 5:00) | 5-0 |
Nico came out of the gate flying getting 4 takedowns and a ride out to end the 1st period. He also added 3 nearfall points during the ride to take an 11-3 lead into the second. Megatron chose down to start the 2nd and quickly escaped and added 3 more takedowns to up his lead to 18-5. Megaludis then turned Jones for 3 more nearfall and the tech fall.
133: | #15 Jimmy Gulibon PSU | tech fall | Victor Lepari CUP, | 16-0 (TF; 3:00) | 10-0 |
Jimmy showed no dual meet issues that plagued his past as he blazed to a tech fall in just three minutes. Gulibon got a quick takedown and started using turning combinations to score points in bunches. He turned Lepari 6 different times and finished off the 16-0 tech fall at the 3:00 minute mark.
141: | #2 Zain Retherford PSU | dec. | Tyler Bedelyon CUP, | 8-4 | 13-0 |
One of the better Eagle efforts on the day was that of Tyler Bedelyon. Bedelyon who has had an up and down senior season quickly grabbed Retherford's leg and finished off the opening takedown. Retherford however, reversed Bedelyon and rode him out to take a 2-2 tie into the second period. Bedelyon chose neutral to start the 2nd and took several good shots but was unable to finish any of them. With the scored tied and Zain owning over 2 minutes of riding time Retherford chose bottom to start the final period. He quickly escaped took a low single shot and after a scramble finished the move to take a 5-2 lead. Retherford cut Bedelyon and took him down again. He cut him one final time but could not add any more takedowns and settled for the 8-4 win with the riding time point. If you're Clarion you'd take that kind of effort from your senior.
149: | James English PSU | dec. | Justin Arthur CUP, | 7-2 | 16-0 |
Senior James English wrestled for Penn State at 149 for the final dual meet of his career. English scored quickly and then controlled the match on top and built up 1:46 in riding time as the period ended. English chose down to start the second and escaped for a 3-0 lead. Arthur shot in deep a couple times but English was able to fight him off and keep the score the same after 2. Arthur chose down and reversed English to cut the lead to 3-2. Arthur cut English but James kept up his offense and scored a late takedown. He then road Arthur for the rest of the period and won 7-2 with over a minute advantage in riding time. It's not clear if English got the nod because he was a senior or if he won the starting position over Beitz in wrestle-offs.
157: | #6 Dylan Alton PSU | dec. | Austin Matthews CUP, | 12-6 | 19-0 |
Alton looked for the throw early but Matthews fought him off to keep the match scoreless. Alton then started shooting and was able to take Matthews down twice for a 4-2 lead with two escapes. Alton then did catch Matthews for a 4 point move to open up an 8-2 lead going into the second. Matthews chose bottom and escaped but Alton built up 1:39 in riding time advantage and the bout moved to the third. Alton started the final period with a reversal and 10-4 score after a Matthews escape with just over a minute to go. Alton looked tired as the period moved on and gave up a takedown with under a minute to go. Alton got the escape and killed the clock for a 12-6 win with the riding time point.
165: | #1 David Taylor PSU | pinned | Michael Pavasko CUP, | WBF (0:11) | 25-0 |
At this point in the match things jumped into fast-forward. I got a total of 4 action shots of David Taylor this was over so fast. Taylor came at Pavasko like he hit his girlfriend, threw him on his back, and pinned him in 11 seconds. There's no more analysis necessary, Taylor is freakishly good.
174: | #4 Matt Brown PSU | pinned | Ryan Darch CUP, | WBF (2:50) | 31-0 |
Brown got in quickly and took a 2-1 lead after a takedown and cut. Brown registered his second takedown and nearly pinned Darch but he fought off his back. Brown added a third takedown but this time leaned back into Darch to finish off the pin.
184: | #2 Ed Ruth PSU | pinned | Dustin Conti CUP, | WBF (1:05) | 37-0 |
Not to be outdone, Ed Ruth grabbed a standing cradle, took his time (by his standards) and flattened Conti for the pin. God these guys are gonna be missed!
197: | #3 Morgan McIntosh PSU | pinned | Danny Sutherland CUP, | WBF (3:11) | 43-0 |
McIntosh came out shooting and scored three takedowns to take a 6-3 lead with 1:26 left in the first. He then added another takedown and turned Sutherland for 3 back points and a 11-3 lead as time ran out. Sutherland chose down to start the second and during a stand attempt Morgan picked him up and brought him back to the mat on his back for the fourth straight pin.
285: | Evan Daley CUP | dec. | #12 Jimmy Lawson PSU, | 7-6 | 43-3 |
The night did not end well for the Penn State faithful as Jimmy Lawson returned from a knee injury and ran out of time losing by a riding time point. At one point the ref asked Jimmy if he was ok and Sanderson yelled at Jimmy to stop worrying about his knee and wrestler. One things for sure, Jimmy did not look 100%.
Overall
Penn State ends the season on a high note and the crowd got to see Ruth and Taylor as we'll always remember them: bonus point machines. 149 is still a question mark as is Dylan Alton and can Jimmy Lawson get closer to healthy before Big Tens? For the first time in a long time we got to see an really good referee. He was very vocal and barked out instructions to the wrestlers, made it very clear what he was calling and why, and even took blame when he made a mistake. It was nice to see this special senior class go out like they did.
