Random Observations
Let's get the unpleasantness out of the way first: it appears the issues Andrew Alton has had with running out of gas are still major problems. Alton sprung out to an 8-2 lead in the first period, but started getting tired in the middle of the second. As Grajales pushed the action, he got several stall calls against Andrew as he couldn't keep up with the pace. Eventually Grajales tied the match and then caught Andrew at the edge of the mat and pinned him. The replay (which the BTN played over and over again) seemed to suggest that Alton wasn't even trying to fight off his back he was that tired. I know Andrew has a lot of potential but if he can't get to the point that he can wrestle 7 minutes strong, it might be time to start looking at Zack Beitz.
Bonus Points
The three big guns did what one would expect: destroy lesser ranked opponents. Matt Brown cleaned up Collin Zeerip 21-6. Ed Ruth got a tech fall over 20th-ranked Abounader, and David Taylor did him one better, beating the 6th-ranked wrestler in the country by a 17-2 tech fall. Morgan McIntosh manhandled Chis Heald by a 10 point major decision. Morgan had 5 takedowns and 3 nearfall points but got a little sloppy in the 3rd giving up a takedown while going for more points. McIntosh did redeem himself getting the reversal and ride out for the final score.
Jimmy Gulibon looked real good getting a 9-0 shut out major decision. Jimmy got a first period takedown and ride out while building up over a minute of riding time. He escaped to start the second and caught Bruno for a 5-point move and rode him for the rest of the period. Not having much luck on bottom, Bruno chose neutral to start the 3rd but there was no more scoring except for the riding time point added at the end.
Decisions, decisions
Jordan Conaway got the nod for a still sick Nico Megaludis and walked away with a 9-4 decision over Conor Youtsey of Michigan. Conaway countered a Youtsey shot in the middle of the 2nd to get a go ahead takedown with the match tied at 3. He then added and escape and two takedowns in the 3rd to finish off the Wolverine freshman.
Dylan Alton doesn't have stamina issues it took him 2 overtime periods to beat 14th-ranked Brian Murphy. The two traded rideouts in the first tie-breaker period sending the bout into the 2nd sudden victory. Alton shot in and finished the winning takedown 20 seconds in the overtime period.
Zain Retherford showed that his lofty ranking was no fluke dominating 13th ranked Steve Dutton 7-1. Zain forced the action got two takedowns and amassed over 2 minutes of riding time. He was so strong on top that Dutton had to choose neutral to start the 3rd.
So Close
Jon Gingrich wasn't active enough against Adam Coon until it was too late. Gingrich got nailed with two stall calls and the resulting penalty point was the difference in a hard fought 2-1 loss. Gingrich did get in on a double late in the 3rd period but Coon fought him off and walked away with the close victory. It would have been nice to see Lawson against Coon but we'll just have to wait until Big Tens for that to possibly happen.
