Just to let y'all know , Coach Franklin been recruiting me before Minnesota and Indiana , know your facts— Chris (@9ChrisRock) February 4, 2014
Campbell was a name that was seemingly removed from the Penn State radar with the commitment of Amani Oruwariye. Clearly the staff had different plans though, as Campbell accepted his offer to join the Nittany Lions tonight. Christian had seemingly narrowed down his choices to Minnesota and Indiana, which makes his commitment to Penn State a surprise. Christian even visited both of those two this past weekend, and has yet to make a visit to State College. Hopefully he'll get a chance to make it over to Happy Valley sooner rather than later.
You can never have too many options in the defensive secondary. Coach Franklin and his staff clearly believe in this idea, as Campbell joins Oruwariye, Grant Haley, Daquan Worley, Trace McSorley, Koa Farmer, and Marcus Allen as secondary recruits in the 2014 class. Christian has just as good a chance as any of them to make an immediate impact for Bob Shoop's defense. From watching his tape, I think he ends up staying at safety (provided he bulks up-which he will). He has a great knack for making plays on the ball, and frankly he's more needed at safety than corner at this point. He has great athleticism, and should make his fair share of big plays when he earns his spot.
As far as how this affects the other commits, the one thing I think this does do is pretty much assure that Koa Farmer will play linebacker for the Lions. He was already a tweener to begin with, and now seems destined to follow the path of Gerald Hodges. Bringing Campbell into the fold allows the staff to mix and match all of these guys wherever they think their strengths play up the most.
Christian's commitment brings the 2014 class to 25, seemingly ending the class. With Lloyd Tubman on decommitment watch though, that could change on National Signing Day. We'll just have to wait and see.
Welcome to Penn State, Christian!
