Barney is the rare Penn State junior college transfer, and the even rarer one to come from the deep south--he enrolled at Penn State fresh out of Bainbridge, GA, by way of Northwest Mississippi Community College. He committed to the Nittany Lions back in November, having been recruited by Larry Johnson, and signed his letter of intent way back on December 18--there was no backing out for Barney despite the coaching change.
The defensive tackle enrolled in January and is, scholarship-wise, a part of the class of 2013, though we're counting him as part of the 2014 class. He comes to Penn State with two more years of eligibility. The benefits he brings are great; he has some experience at a higher level, and he already has the size and strength to make an immediate impact with the departure of NT DaQuan Jones. He notched 18 solo tackles (36 overall) last year at NMCC--as an interior defensive lineman, and in only six games (all losses). He had three and a half sacks for 31 (!!) yards, and logged a fumble recovery.
Barney should be able to crack Coach Chaos' two deep, at least, right away, and see significant playing time as a relative newcomer to the Nittany Lion program.
