Following a freshly ground, French pressed cup of Sumatran, Mr. McSorely and son Trace retired to the study, amid a wall of leather bound books and rich, Corinthian leather reading chairs. On the credenza, sitting idle for the moment, rested the object of their attention: a Hewlett-Packard inkjet 4-in-1. As Trace passed the signed form to his father, Mr. McSorely set the machine to fax mode, shook his son's hand, noticed the firm grip of adulthood, smiled, and, in a moment of tenderness, whispered, 'I'm proud of you.'
Seconds later, in the Bryce Jordan Center, out plopped Trace McSorely's signed letter of intent. James Franklin moon-walked the stage, spun 360, dropped in a split, bounced back up, and gave a "tee-hee" shout into a cordless mic while wearing one white glove. The crowd of thousands roared its approval.
McSorely was a longtime object of Coach Franklin's affection, first recruiting the 6', 180lb QB/safety to Vandy, and more recently, to State College. Hand-timed at 4.5 in the 40-yard dash, McSorely may be the fastest Irishman on the planet. That bodes well for Trace's ability to fill multiple roles on the Penn State squad other than "starting quarterback". Six-foot, fast guys can play a lot of positions on a football team, and more than likely, Trace's future role won't be underneath center.
