Per an announcement made by Penn State men’s basketball head coach Pat Chambers today, freshman point guard Graham Woodward will be transferring from Happy Valley this summer after being released from his scholarship.

The full release, at the link above, is quite short, and no reason for the transfer is given. Woodward was seen by some as the likely starter in the point guard position next year after the graduation of fifth year senior and third team all-Big Ten PG Tim Frazier. Woodward saw significant time as the season wore on, eventually scoring 88 points in 389 minutes (31 games). He shot 39% from beyond the arc, and had a 36.6% field goal percentage on the year, and started six games for the Lions down the stretch.

With the departure of Woodward, it’s unknown who will step into the starting point guard position next year alongside second team all-Big Ten guard DJ Newbill, who played out of position at point in the 2012-2013 season. The Lions will be joined next year by 3* guard recruits Shep Garner and Isaiah Washington, who will vy for playing time alongside Geno Thorpe and John Johnson.

Woodward is the second player to announce he’s transferring from Chambers’ squad this year, after fellow guard Allen Roberts made the same decision before this past season was through.

Julian Moore is expected to receive a medical redshirt for 2013-14, but that has not been confirmed as of yet.

Update (6:45pm by CM): Woodward's departure is attributed to a philosophical disagreement with Chambers, as David Jones reported this afternoon. Penn State now has two scholarships they can fill for the 2014-15 season, and one of those may very well go to JuCo point guard Devin Foster, who is visiting this weekend for the Blue-White game. Foster would have junior eligibility and would be able to play immediately.

Another name to watch (though he'd have to sit out a year) is Boston University transfer and Philadelphia native Maurice Watson Jr, who has mentioned Penn State as one of the nine schools he is considering, according to City of Basketball Love's Josh Verlin. Watson averaged 13.3 ppg and 7.2 apg in his sophomore season at BU and is one of the most highly coveted transfers in college basketball. His Philly ties should give Penn State a fighting chance but Chambers needs to secure a visit (either in-home or on-campus) posthaste, as Watson is expected to make his decision "soon."
