Penn State Injury Report and Depth Chart: Northwestern Edition

Could Miles Dieffenbach be back on the field before anyone would have expected? Possibly!

Matthew O'Haren-USA TODAY Sports

Penn State had the least depth of any team in the country--and then it lost key players in the linebacking corps and offensive line--which made it imperative that nobody else suffer injuries.

So far, they haven't.

Obviously, Miles Dieffenbach, Ben Kline, and Adam Breneman remain out indefinitely, with knee, achilles, and knee injuries, respectively. Apparently, Dieffenbach's recovery process has been rapidly accelerated, with the big guy even showing up in pads at practices this week. But James Franklin is James Franklin, and refuses to update the timetable, so...yeah. He's probably not playing tomorrow, but with two byes in three weeks following Saturday's game, he could be gearing up for a return in the second half. Or not. Who the hell knows?

As for the depth chart, there are a few remarkably minor changes: Albert Hall is now the top backup at both OT positions, Derek Dowrey and Brian Gaia continue to flip back and forth as they jockey for the starting spot at guard, Marcus Allen has passed Malik Golden on the backup safety ranks, and Jesse Della Valle is now officially the top punt returner, even though he'd been doing all the punt returning anyway. So.
