Penn State Depth Chart and Injury Report: Akron Edition

New, 43 comments

Penn State emerged mostly unscathed from its trip to Ireland. See who's in and who's out, right here.

Steve Flynn-USA TODAY Sports

If we've learned anything, it's that James Franklin's coaching staff is going to be tight-lipped when it comes to player health. It'll be cryptic hints from reporters at practice that tell us who's in a non-contact jersey, who's off to the side riding an exercise bike, who's getting looked at from the trainers that clue us in as to who might be out and who might be in. So, with that in mind, in an era where nothing is known and nothing is knowable, we've come to this:

Last week, the absences from Penn State's roster were Matt Zanellato, Jake Kiley, Nick Scott, Tarow Barney, and Anthony Smith. It looks like Zanellato will be back tomorrow, but again, who the hell knows. Tarow Barney might be joining the DT rotation against Akron, but you can parse through the tea leaves yourselves. Lastly, Jesse James was limited in the second half last week after taking a big hit, but pronounced himself ready to go, so he's somewhere in the probable range.

Of course, Miles Dieffenbach, Ben Kline, and Adam Breneman remain out indefinitely, with knee, achilles, and knee injuries, respectively.

On to the depth chart!

Very few changes in James Franklin's week two three-deep: Brandon Mahon leapfrogs Derek Dowrey at left guard, though the two are still separated by an "OR." Mahon got the start last week, as well. After a strong game returning kicks, Grant Haley, along with Von Walker, are your starters at the position, ahead of Akeel Lynch and Eugene Lewis.
