Around The B1G
Awful Announcing reports that revenue per Big Ten team is expected to reach $40,000,000 per year. So we should all remember to thank Maryland and Rutgers for adding revenue to our pockets and also giving us a win on the football field 75% of the time.
Owen Riese of Bucky's Fifth Quarter wrote an article detailing how Wisconsin used the jet sweep against Illinois to help give its run game a jump-start. So maybe MOAR jet sweep?
Crimson Quarry's Kyle Robbins opines on the future of this season for Indiana football. Reading his thoughts reminds me exactly of how it feels being a die-hard PSU hoops fan. Fans outside the B1G may not appreciate how close Indiana is at breaking out and becoming a very scary team, but we do. It's not often that PSU football looks at Indiana and is jealous, but every Lion fan would trade offensive coordinators with the Hoosiers any day.
When Penn State takes on Illinois this weekend it will be the third time the team has played a B1G opponent that was playing without the coach that was in place in August. Travis Miller at Hammer and Rails is already thinking about a replacement at Purdue for coach Darrell Hazell.
One team that is not thinking about firing its coach is Iowa. Kirk Ferentz is the longest-tenured Big Ten coach and currently has the Hawkeyes ranked #10 with a favorable schedule remaining. Hawk Central handed out the mid-season awards for the team. Take a look and familiarize yourself with one of the surprise teams in the nation.
TWIWSSAHWAH (This week in winter sports such as hoops, wrestling and hockey)
During football season it is easy to forget that Penn State hoops and hockey are a thing, too. The men's and women's basketball teams will host the inaugural Tip-off Luncheon on Friday. In just Isaiah Washington more days Pat Chambers and his crew will kick off the season with a game versus VMI in the Bryce Jordan Center on November 14th. Washington has been a somewhat overlooked member of the team while taking his freshmen red-shirt but is poised to become a household name in the greater Boalsburg area.
You may have missed it but Tim Frazier has secured a roster spot on the Portland Trail Blazers. It could not have happened to a better former Lion and it makes SWH more likely to tune in when Portland is on the tube.
DJ Newbill is kicking it across the pond, honing his game in hopes that he can find a way to the NBA. That doesn't mean that he isn't still in touch with his former coach, mentor, and lifelong friend Pat Chambers.

Cael Sanderson will lead his group of fighters on November 13th in a match with Lock Haven in State College. Sanderson has been reeling in the recruits two at a time. Jtothep put out a great primer for the season a couple of weeks ago. Read this and you will have a better understanding of the guys as they attempt to reclaim the mountaintop. In other news Jan Johnson has made the switch from walk-on football player to PSU wrestler. On the heals of an injury to heavyweight Nick Nevills, Johnson will attempt to step in to fill the void left.
On the ice the newest news is that Casey Bailey has been recalled by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Bailey saw time in the NHL last season partially as a stipulation of his contract. While this trip to the NHL may not be permanent it shows how close the former Lion is to skating in the NHL on a regular basis. This week the PSU hoops and hockey teams will have former players representing the school at the highest level at the same time.
The Penn State hockey team is once again exceeding expectations. It is the only B1G squad to garner a weekly honor each week thus far this year. Freshmen Chase Berger was honored as the 3rd star in Big Ten play this week. Fellow frosh Andrew Sturtz was acknowledged as making the play of the week by NCAA.com when he scored his first goal and looked an awful lot like Bobby Orr in doing so.
The hockey team picked up what looks like the future goalie for the program. Ian Zlotnik brought it to the attention of BSDers on Tuesday that Peyton Jones has agreed to join the team next year.

Quick Hits
Onward State took a look inside the Penn State Bakery. Check out the video and next time you are in State College, take a visit if not just for the savory smells. The Blue Band will organize a Purple Out for the football game on Saturday in remembrance of Kayla Nakonechni, who recently passed away after a battle with cancer. John Urschel nearly grabbed his first NFL pass last weekend but the play was negated by the meanie refs.
