Around the B1G

Iowa football is now sitting in a playoff spot, holding the 4th position. While some fans do not appreciate the Hawkeye's style of play, SWH hopes that Iowa wins the National Championship with a 6-4 victory. The Ohio State University football team is currently at No. 8 in the playoff committee's rankings and had a little bit of controversy when Zeke Elliot spoke his mind after the game. Elliot was critical of the coaching staff but would apologize quickly.

Michigan State is sitting in pole position in the Big Ten East and with a win versus Penn State, Sparty would advance to a B1G Championship match with Iowa. MSU is likely in a position where winning the B1G would garner a playoff spot. It's amazing that four B1G teams still have a hopes of making the National Championship with just one game left in the regular season.

Michigan has the longest shot of the four B1G teams hoping for a chance at the playoffs. Michigan needs Penn State to defeat Michigan State, a win versus Ohio State and then Iowa in the Big Ten championship, plus additional help around the country. It would take a little chaos for the Wolverines and it all hinges on a PSU win on Saturday. There are sevaral teams between No. 10 Michigan and the fourth playoff spot, but three of the teams ahead would be eliminated by the time Michigan won the B1G title.

Four teams are holding on to hopes of finishing with six wins and a potential bowl opportunity. There are murmurs that Kevin Wilson's fate should ride on a win this weekend. Wilson has Indiana (5-6) on the cusp of a non-losing season and only Purdue is standing in the way. Illinois will have a chance to get to .500 on the season when it takes on Northwestern with the Land of Lincoln trophy on the line. Following the firing of Tim Beckman just before the start of the season, the team has ripped off five wins and have a chance to tie the highest win total in the three year tenure of Beckman. Minnesota has a chance to grab a sixth win when it takes on Wisconsin. The Gophers went through a coaching change mid-season when Jerry Kill stepped away for health reasons. Nebraska started out slow this year but with a referee-gifted win over Sparty and a miraculous win at home this weekend when Iowa comes to town, it would finish 6-6. The majority of Big Ten fans want Iowa to win but many others hope that the Huskers Du.

Penn State Sports

The women's soccer team beat Ohio State to advance to the NCAA elite 8 this weekend. The team will face West Virginia at home on Jeffrey Field at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Megan Shafer was named to TopDrawerSoccer's Team of the Week after an impressive 5-point performance last weekend.

The Penn State baseball team has taken a trip to Cuba and lost the opening game. This historic trip has also allowed students from the sports journalism department at Penn State to enjoy the nice weather and experience as well. The baseball team will play three additional exhibition games before returning to State College.

The women's cross country team took 16th place at the NCAA championships this past weekend.

The women's volleyball team will take on Northwestern tonight at 7 p.m. at home on senior night. The match will be available via BTN Plus stream. The team will face Nebraska on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. in a match that will be televised on the Big Ten Network. The pair of matches this week comes with the opportunity to avenge losses earlier this season at the hands of the Cornhuskers and Wildcats.

Bo Nickal was named Big Ten wrestler of the week after a pair of wins in California last week. Cael Sanderson's squad has the week off and will host the Nittany Lion Open on December 6.
