I can confirm that DB Zech McPhearson has committed to #PennState— Ryan Snyder (@RivalsSnyder) April 19, 2015
With rumors about Lavert Hill's status at Penn State being up in the air, locking up a cornerback in the event that Hill flips his commitment to Michigan was a big need for James Franklin and co. The squad got that with the addition of McPhearson, who comes to State College by way of Maryland.
It always seemed like McPhearson was going to end up at PSU -- his Crystal Ball on 24/7 showed eight predictions, all for Penn State -- today just made it official. One thing that certainly helped is the Maryland native's ties to Happy Valley. His older brother, Josh, is a sophomore walk-on wide receiver for the Nittany Lions.
McPhearson was offered by the Nittany Lions on March 3, the same day that he picked up offers from Alabama and Pittsburgh. For now, McPhearson gives the Nittany Lions a pair of defensive back commits in the class of 2016, along with Hill. He is also the sixth member of Penn State's 2016 class.
Penn State has a ton of talent at cornerback in 2016, as guys like Grant Haley, Christian Campbell, John Reid and Garrett Taylor will be on the roster. With that in mind, it's perfectly reasonable to think that McPhearson redshirts during his first year on campus, but of course, crazier things have happened and you can never have enough talented cornerbacks.
McPhearson is Penn State's second recruit out of the state of Maryland, joining four-star defensive end Shane Simmons. The Nittany Lions have two top-10 recruits out of Maryland, which is more than any other school in the country. Yes, that includes you, University of Maryland. I believe that this graphic properly sums things up.
If you'd like to give the new guy a follow on the ol' Twitter machine, you can find him @Zmcphearson.
Welcome to Penn State, Zechariah!
