Another day, another massive defensive tackle for the Nittany Lions. As we know, Penn State has a big need up the middle that the class is looking to address in this class, and it picked up its first defensive tackle in New Jersey's Michael Dwumfour on Tuesday. Today, Penn State picked up one of its literal biggest targets in North Carolina's Christian Colón.
The Nittany Lions have been in the mix for Colón – who boasts quite the offer list for a three-star prospect and moved up his announcement date today from November 6 to this afternoon – for some time. Franklin officially offered him on February 28, 2015, the same day that Colón attended Junior Day in State College. At that point in time, Colón was seen as a virtual lock by some, and was considered a prime target to be the next to commit. He slowed things down a bit after gathering some new offers and interests, but always kept the Nittany Lions in mind,
He also attended Penn State's camp at Davidson last Wednesday, where the Nittany Lions' coaches reportedly spent a lot of time working with him. Colón is also scheduled to come up for Lasch Bash next month.
Outlook:
Of course, there's no reason to jump to conclusions, but this guy at least looks like the next Austin Johnson. He's a massive human being, coming in at 6'3", 325 lbs. At the very least, Colón will likely be a massive run stopper who clogs the middle and makes things easier for the people lining up right next to him.
As for redshirting, that can go either way. Of course, a player of Colón's size can make an impact no matter what, but it's certainly not crazy to think that Franklin will want him to get into the weight room, let Dwight Galt work with him and transform his body for a year. Regardless, Colón has a floor of "massive guy who makes running the ball difficult" and a ceiling of "the Mountain from Game Of Thrones." Or something like that.
Check out what he had to say in an interview with Scout following his recruitment.
Christian's commitment brings Penn State's class to 13.
