Only Paul Posluszny Until Penn State Football

51 days and counting... (Sorry Cole)

Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

Alright.  Admittedly, this is (kind of) cheating.  But there's no number 51 on the 2015 Penn State Football roster, so we had to figure something out.

Paul Posluszny wore number 31 during his Hall of Fame caliber four year career with the Nittany Lions.  A two-time All-American, two-time national defensive player of the year, and ESPN's Academic All-American of the Year for 2006, Poz may lay claim to the most prestigious of all titles - greatest Nittany Lion linebacker to ever grace the grass at Beaver Stadium.  The first junior captain in decades at Penn State, Posluszny's leadership dragged Penn State out of the "dark years" era of 2001 through 2004 and back to national prominence with Big Ten and Orange Bowl Championships in 2005, where the team finished 3rd nationally.

In 2007, the Aliquippa native (and Hopewell High alum) was selected with the 34th overall pick in the NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills.  Rather than wear number 31, Poz elected to wear today's countdown number - 51.

After four years with the Bills in which he was named a team captain and team defensive MVP (but also struggled with several random injuries, including two broken arms), he signed as a free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars.  In 2014, he was a Pro Bowl selection.

Maybe it was cheating, but it was for a good reason.  Poz is the greatest.  Also, big shout to this upstanding fruit merchant from somewhere in Southern California.
