Welcome aboard Jered Cortez from suburban Chicago, who until a week ago Be Illin'.
Future Penn State 133 Jered Cortez
Cortez was a premier recruit in 2014: #12 overall, and #1 at 125/133. He was a 4x Illinois state champ and a 2x freestyle national champ.
He had visited State College while in high school, and very nearly committed to PSU. Unfortunately he chose to stay in state. But, after a year in the same town as Tim Beckman, he had to flee, and who could blame him? When he decided to transfer, he made the right choice. The lesson: even if he must wait a year, Cael gets his man.
Cortez must sit out this year due to Big 10 transfer rules. He will then succeed Jordan Conaway at 133, with 3 years of remaining eligibility.
He will have an immediate impact once cleared to start. Last year he went 6-2 as a shirting true freshman while growing into 133. His only losses were both close decisions at the vaunted Midlands tournament, to Penn national qualifier Caleb Richardson and to Iowa national finalist Cory Clark.
Here he is destroying Missouri 4x state champ Jaydin Clayton, himself a highly-prized 2015 recruit: 718154-126-lbs-match-Jaydin-Clayton-vs-Jered-Cortez.0.html
