The Tale
It's hard to underestimate just how big this commitment is for Penn State basketball. Tony "Tone" Carr is arguably the top player in Philadelphia's class of 2016, and by all indications he was Pat Chambers' top priority in this class. Anytime a player with serious interest from the likes of Indiana and Maryland (to name just a few) chooses Penn State, it's a pretty big deal. That's because it's never happened before.
Like most of the recruiting successes the Nittany Lions have enjoyed since Chambers took over in 2011, the relationship between Carr and the Penn State coaches began early in the process. Carr's first recorded visit to State College came last September, and the Lions offered him a scholarship shortly thereafter. He's made at least three trips since then, all with current Roman Catholic teammate and future Penn State teammate Nazeer Bostick. Bostick made it clear when he committed that he would try to recruit some of his Team Final teammates to join him. He's batting 1.000 so far.
Rated a top-60 player by three of the four major scouting services, Carr is the type of player you would expect to start from day one at a program like Penn State. An intelligent 6'4" floor general with an uncanny ability to get to the rim and find the open man, Carr is a reliable jumpshot and a few pounds of muscle away from being a future pro. He's a proven winner at Roman with Bostick - the Cahilites won literally every title they could've won in 2014-15 - and if they can carry that tradition into Happy Valley, Penn State basketball might be in for some glory years of their own. Relatively speaking, of course.

All possible hyperbole aside, this is a massive pickup for Chambers and further cements Penn State's status as a realistic option for the best talent in both the city of Philadelphia and the state of Pennsylvania. Carr has discussed at length the possibility of joining forces with AAU teammate and fellow top-100 recruit Lamar Stevens in college, and the pair will reunite for their senior season at Roman Catholic.. We'll just have to wait and see - Stevens seems to be especially high on Villanova and Indiana, in addition to most of the schools that have offered Carr - but this certainly puts Penn State in an enviable position for his commitment. In fact, the Nittany Lions got their first Crystal Ball pick for Stevens in the run up to Carr's announcement. Buckle up, y'all.
Welcome, Tone!
