Barkley, Smith earn B1G POTW Honors

NCAA Football: Temple at Penn State Matthew O'Haren-USA TODAY Sports

In a homecoming game where Penn State rolled past Maryland after an impressive display on both sides of the ball, its efforts were justly rewarded.

Sophomore running back Saquon Barkley and junior linebacker Brandon Smith were named this week’s Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week respectively by the Big Ten Conference,

Smith becomes the second straight Nittany Lion to win the defensive award, following om the footsteps of safety Marcus Allen. The walk-on turned started produced a career-high fourteen tackles and a key interception again the Terps.

Barkley was up to his old tricks, rushing for a career high 202 yards on 31 carries including a 45-yard touchdown dash that gave Penn State the momentum back heading into half time.

The awards continue the good vibes around the program after two consecutive victories heading into the bye week. James Franklin and co. will have a tall task to keep that momentum going as they welcome undefeated Ohio State in two weeks at Beaver Stadium.
