Connor McGovern Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

The True Freshman Right Guard Continues to Impress

NCAA Football: Temple at Penn State Matthew O'Haren-USA TODAY Sports

By all accounts, the fans and coaching staff had high expectations for True Freshman Connor McGovern before the season. The early enrollee out of Lake Lehman High School in Pennsylvania was highly recruited prospect with outstanding size from day one.

Well, McGovern has surpassed those expectations and was rightfully rewarded as such this week, being named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. According to a press release by Penn State Football, McGovern is the first PSU Offensive Lineman to be awarded a Big Ten weekly accolade.

McGovern helped pave the way for Penn State’s offense to post 599 total yards against Iowa last week and has showed continued improvement throughout the season, especially given the absences of both Andrew Nelson and Brendan Mahon. McGovern becomes just the third Offensive Lineman to win a weekly award in B1G history, joining late Ohio State tackle Korey Stringer and former Michigan State tackle Sean Poole. He is the first interior lineman to win said award.
