Penn State is back in the mainstream, and it’s a good thing this time. Bruce Feldman, of FOX Sports wrote about the program’s resurgence this year, going so far as to call them a “Big Ten heavyweight”. Head Coach James Franklin even got a mention in Pat Forde’s column on Yahoo! Sports as a Coach of the Year candidate. It’s almost as if he’s a good coach.

Even before the latest news about Brendan Mahon, there were concerns about the o-line depth at tackle. Andrew Callahan takes a look at the remaining options for Penn State, including potentially burning freshman Will Fries’ redshirt.

The football team isn’t the only one registering high in polls, with the hockey team also at #12 in the main media poll (USA Today). Like his counterpart James Franklin, Guy Gadowsky is trying to keep his team focused on the results rather than rankings. A pair of neutral observers discuss whether or not Penn State’s hockey team is “for real” and deserving a high rank.

The women’s hockey team is turning heads as well, with freshman Katie McMillan named Rookie of the Week by College Hockey America. Senior Amy Petersen won Player of the Week for the second week in a row.

Delgreco Wilson of Black Cager Sports sat down with Pat Chambers to talk about the upcoming season, and in particular the influx of Philadelphia-based recruits to Penn State during his tenure. Anyone curious about #theprocess at Penn State over the past few years, and how Chambers was able to build a recruiting base in Philly needs to listen to this interview. On top of that, Pat and Delgreco talk about DJ Newbill’s time at Penn State and the academic mentoring provided by Chambers and the coaching staff.
