Wrestling Preview: No. 4 Penn State vs Binghamton

New, 26 comments

A week after taking down Lehigh in the BJC, the Nittany Lions return to Rec Hall to take on the Bearcats.

Bo Nickal

A few Nittany Lions have recently faced Bearcats, but none of the current lineup of Penn State wrestling were at the Binghamton Open earlier this year (which saw future PSU great Mark Hall come away with a crown). The Penn State squad as a whole, though, has only wrestled Binghamton itself once before in a dual meet, winning eight years ago.

Last week while the Lions were wrestling Lehigh, the Bearcats were finishing fourth at the Cliff Keen Vegas Invitiational, and had a busy weekend prior to hitting State College—they beat Hofstra on Friday night, and Princeton on Saturday afternoon. Their toughest meet is their last, as they only bring one ranked wrestler on the road.

Suriano is very, very good. He’s climbed in the rankings every week, and he’s unlikely to stop at number four. Nick is facing a sophomore who placed at the EIWA tournament last year, but didn’t make the NCAAs - and Bulzomi is better this year. But this should be an easy one for the blue and white.

Cortez bounced back well after his last loss, and I expect a similar result this weekend - if he also bounces back from whatever it appeared ailed him. His Bearcat opponent hasn’t wrestled much this season and doesn’t have a winning record on the year, so this should be a good return for Jered.

Jimmy moved up in the rankings this week despite his loss to Cruz, in part because of his strong showing, but also because the wrestlers in front of him lost. He’s faced arguably the toughest draw of any of the Nittany Lion wrestlers in the lineup, so this should be a good change for him.

Zain has seven pins in a row—even over top ten wrestler Gardner last week. The bet on this one isn’t whether he’ll get number eight, but rather how long Kropman lasts before being put on his back.

Prediction: Zain by Fall

Nolf has three technical falls in a row after getting five pins in his first five matches. I predict he’ll get back to his pinning ways this week.

Cenzo has one of the tougher opponents on the day (DePrez was a very strong wrestler for the Bearcats last year), but it shouldn’t matter too much. He’s moved up in the rankings, now inside the top-10, and will look to show it.

Sheed moved down a few places after his loss to Preisch, who is now ahead of him.

Bo has won every match by pin this year, and is finally above Myles Martin in the rankings since the Buckeye lost last week. He’s still on a tear, and looking to dominate. This sophomore Bo is one scary dude, and I can’t bet against him - even though he’s facing the only ranked Bearcat of the day (Schneider qualified for the NCAAs last season).

Mouse has been the biggest surprise so far this year, bumping up a weight with ease. He faces a NY State high school champion, but he faces wrestlers as tough (if not tougher) in the weight room every day. I expect McCutcheon to exert his dominance today.

Nick should cap off the day well for Penn State, fresh off a win over a ranked wrestler - but he still dropped in the rankings. I’m excited to see his offense, and how he can take on a decent opponent (he’s another NY state champ). Nevills should win with fair ease, but how he does it is what is interesting.

Prediction: Nevills by Dec

Score: PSU 42, Binghamton 0
