Oh, Goodbye: PA ATH Aaron Mathews Flips to Pitt

Well, that's weird.

247Sports

Just a month after committing to the Penn State Nittany Lions, Pittsburgh-area athlete Aaron Mathews has decided to flip his commitment to the Pittsburgh Panthers.

The decision comes on the heels of a surprise visit to Pitt this past weekend, that must have been quite the eye-opener for the Clairton athlete. It also certainly helps that the Panthers were able to offer him as a wide receiver (his apparent preferred position) after not being able to bring JuCo receiver Juwan Winfree into the fold.

It's certainly strange to see Mathews make this sudden decision, especially considering the fact that he's held an offer from the Panthers for quite some time, and how much he previously seemed to crave a Penn State offer. However, playing one's preferred position can often be a deal-breaker on the recruiting trail, and in this instance, Pitt just had slightly more to offer Mathews in that regard than Penn State did.

Losing a recruit is never a good thing, but Mathews wasn't a make-or-break player in the class, so the Lions still have some flexibility with the final two days and a good number of targets still available.
