BSD Wrestler of the Meet
157lb Freshman #1 Jason Nolf
If you pin a D1 wrestler off of an ankle pick and (brief) scramble, you get to be our wrestler of the meet. It's in the blog rule book. Besides, it's been, like, three weeks since Nolf won this highly regarded, highly sought after accolade.
Three Five Completely Random, Probably Useless Thoughts
1) Great win for Jordan Conaway, who took it to fellow 5th year senior Mason Beckman, a 2x All-American. But I feel badly for Beckman - something is clearly "off" for him in his last go.
2) Mouse, with a bulky left knee, came up short against Nate Brown. No shame there. Gabe Dean and Brown are the clear top 2 at 184, and have been since Ed Ruth graduated.
3) Welcome to Penn State, Nick Nevills The CA native made his official debut, and scored on his beautiful snatch single in the first period. He ran a turk and used an illegal face smash to turn #14 Wessell - and that dinged him for a penalty point. It proved decisive. Leading 4-3 late in the 3rd period with 1:08 in riding time, Nick took a not-great shot which Wessell countered for the takedown. Ten seconds later Nick's RT advantage was gone. He escaped, and got in on what would have been the winning takedown, but came up about 5 seconds short. No worries, though. He has lead hips and quick feet. Excited to see what he does at Big Tens.
4) Virginia Tech beat #3 NC State tonight, 19-14. Look for the Hokies to climb the Coaches Poll, the Wolfpack to drop, and, most likely, Oklahoma State to visit Rec Hall next weekend for the inaugural Dual Championship Series national title match.
5) Oh by the way - Penn State has beaten (deep breath)...the EIWA conference champ, the Pac12 conference champ, and the ACC conference champ in its non-conference schedule.
