Damion Barber's tale begins a year ago tomorrow, when he made an appearance at the 2015 Junior Day as a high school sophomore. As was the case with Micah Parsons earlier today, the staff has made a point of getting their top sophomore targets on campus for these events. At the time, he did not hold an offer from PSU. That would come in June of 2015 after camping at Penn State. He was back on campus for the Lasch Bash in July, and for two games this fall (Rutgers, Michigan).
Going into this weekend, Damion had tweeted he was considering a commitment next week, but clearly was ready to join the Class of 2017. He joins Cincinnati QB Sean Clifford, and Virginia LB Dylan Rivers as the current commits in their class. According to the 247Sports Composite, he ranks as the 12th best player in Pennsylvania, and the 21st strong side defensive end nationally.
The Outlook:
I feel like I write the same thing a lot for defensive end prospects, but Damion has that great first step that every coach looks for. As is the case with a lot of young players still developing, he relies on that athleticism to play the position. He will need to get stronger at the next level, as he goes up against Big 10 competition.
All in all, Damion is another very talented player to add to the Lions' growing stable of defensive end talent.
Welcome to Penn State, Damion!
