Baseball: Penn State's baseball team is having an impressive season, especially when you consider the program's history. They are 25-20 on the season, with a 10-8 Big Ten record, and are boasting a 14-6 record in home games. Considering that Penn State was projected to finish 11th out of 13 by D1 Baseball (remember that Wisconsin does not have a varsity baseball team) before the season, the fact that head coach Rob Cooper has them sitting in seventh in just his third season at the helm is quite a feat.
The team is led by a young pitching rotation of sophomores Sal Biasi and Taylor Lehman and freshman Justin Hagenman. Hagenman sports a 2.83 ERA, while Biasi is averaging nearly a strikeout per inning. The team's closer is Jack Anderson, the program's all-time leader in saves who we have mentioned here before due to his appearance in the Midseason Stopper Award watch list. Offensively, junior shortstop Jim Haley leads the way with an OPS of .884 (and his OBP is .409, for those scoring at home). Nick Riotto (.842 OPS) and Greg Guers (.774) are two other keys to getting the Nittany Lions offense going.
Are you going to be up at Penn State for commencement ceremonies this weekend? You're in luck, so is Penn State's baseball team. Their three-game homestand with 10th-ranked TCU includes games at 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday. Medlar Field is a beautiful stadium and with Penn State playing its best baseball in years, there could not be a better time to check them out.
Men's Lacrosse: The 18th-ranked men's lacrosse team knocked off Michigan on senior day Saturday, securing the Creator's Trophy and locking up a spot in the Big Ten Tournament. What is the Creator's Trophy? There is an actual answer to this question, but if you would prefer to come up with your own explanation for what exactly the Creator's Trophy is, ignore that link and let us know your theory down in the comments.
Penn Relays: The famous Penn Relays took place at Franklin Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, with Penn State participating in a number of events across men's and women's track-and-field events. Ryan Kerr won the men's javelin throw with a particularly nice throw of 69.72 meters. The Nittany Lions also won their bread-and-butter event, the men's 4x800 meter relay, with a time of 7:17.37. You can read up on the rest of the winners here.
Quick Hits: Women's lacrosse senior Madison Cyr has been named as a nominee for the Tewaaraton Award, placing her among the top 25 players in the country ... as mentioned above, this weekend is graduation weekend at Penn State, and your daughter or son's graduation ceremony is at the most convenient time possible for your family ... the softball team is still 13-7 in Big Ten play despite dropping a doubleheader to 2nd-ranked Michigan on Saturday.
