Penn State Basketball: Virginia Tech Transfer Satchel Pierce to Visit PSU Thursday

The Kiski Prep (PA) alum is the first transfer to visit Happy Valley this offseason. Where does he fit into Pat Chambers' roster plans?

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

It's been a pleasantly quiet offseason for Penn State hoops thus far. With no player defections in the "transfer epidemic" era, the program appears uncharacteristically stable heading into a vital couple of seasons for Pat Chambers. The lone shoe left to drop this summer is the 13th scholarship, and the dilemma that comes with it; does Chambers opt for a standard sit-out transfer or look to the immediately-eligible grad transfer, leaving a scholarship for a 2017 recruit in the process?

We may have that answer soon. Satchel Pierce, once recruited by Chambers out of Saltsburg, PA's Kiski Prep, will visit Penn State on Thursday according to multiple reports, most notably Hoopseen.com's Corey Evans:

A true seven-footer, Pierce's playing time decreased by over seven minutes per game from his freshman to sophomore season as true frosh Kerry Blackshear leapfrogged him in Buzz Williams' rotation. It's likely that Pierce would have found himself even further down the depth chart in 2016-17 with the arrival of Oak Hill's Khadim Sy in Blacksburg this summer.

Because he played in each of his first two seasons, Pierce will have to sit out the entire 2016-17 season wherever he ends up, barring an unlikely waiver from the NCAA. Should Pierce pledge to Penn State, the Nittany Lions would need to, uh, get creative in order to bring in one class of 2017 recruit. Here's the current scholarship breakdown:
