Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Steven Gonzalez is expected to compete for playing time this year alongside fellow 2015 signee Ryan Bates. At 6’4’’ and 339 pounds (and like the offensive lineman before him in the countdown), the New Jersey native has both the size and agility to challenge for a spot at either center or guard. According to James Franklin, Gonzalez is fighting with Brendan Mahon and Derek Dowrey for the right guard position.
As a recruit, Gonzalez was rated among the top players in the Garden State, and was ranked as a four-star recruit by ESPN. He committed to Penn State in March of 2014, despite offers from Ohio State, Michigan State, and lineman factory Wisconsin.
Gonzalez hopes to work in the sports industry following graduation, is a “diehard Minnesota Vikings fan” according to his Twitter account (WHY?), and was born in the same town as rapper Akon, gold-medalist Otis Davis, and former New York Giant Paul Jappe.
