Lady Lions Volleyball ninth in initial AVCA Coaches poll

Russ Rose and co. looking to reclaim the National Championship

NCAA Volleyball: Women's Volleyball Championship-Stanford vs Penn State Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Russ Rose and his Lady Lion Volleyball team will have something prove this season after what many are calling a down year in 2015.

The Lady Lions finished ninth in the final AVCA coaches poll last year and they’ll start right there in 2016.

The first coaches poll of 2016 was released today and saw Penn State and six other Big Ten teams land in the top 25. Defending national champions Nebraska are back at the top to start the new season, led by first team All-American Kadie Rolfzen.

Penn State will return first team All-American Haleigh Washington as well as honorable mention All-American Ali Frantti. The Lady Lions will be looking to regain the national championship which they’ve won seven times previously, including back-to-back in 2013 and 2014 and four straight between 2007 and 2010. Each of Penn State’s national championships have come under the direction of Rose, who will be at the helm of the Lady Lions for his 38th season in 2016. Rose’s squad will return all but four members of last year’s squad that reached the NCAA regional semifinals before falling to Hawaii in straight sets.
