The National Champion Penn State Wrestling team released their schedule today. The big change, according to the press release, is that the Lions will not be attending the Southern Scuffle this year and will instead make the trek to Reno, Nevada for the Reno Tournament of Champions on December 18--the first time they will compete in the event since 2009-2010. The Scuffle, along with the Midlands Tournament, are regarded as the best non-postseason tournaments in the sport and were a great early-season barometer of how the team would fare come postseason time the last few years. The Nittany Lion Open was also left off the schedule; Penn State will instead head to Penn for the Keystone Classic on November 20.
It appears to be one of the weaker home schedules in recent memory, as Iowa, Ohio State, Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin all will welcome the defending national champions in their home arenas, as well as an opponent to be named later in the NWCA series. Penn State hosted Oklahoma State last year in the National Duals with all participating Big Ten teams being host sites last year, and the rest of the nation being hosts this year.
Penn State opens their title defense this season at Army on Friday, November 11 at 7 PM. Two days later they will take on Joey McKenna and Stanford in the home opener at 2PM. The Bryce Jordan Center dual meet will be against in-state rival Lehigh on December 4 at 2 PM.
