Penn State 2016 Football Training Camp Roundup

Notes from the week that was at Penn State camp.

NCAA Football: Penn State Spring Game Matthew O'Haren-USA TODAY Sports

It’s almost time, with one week of practice left for the Nittany Lions before the matchup against Kent State! Check the roundup of links, videos, photos and updates from this week at Penn State training camp. This should get you psyched for next Saturday.

McSorley at QB

Trace McSorley won the starting job, not a surprising choice given that he has held the backup job for two years, and played well in the TaxSlayer Bowl as well as in the Blue-White game. Hear more from Trace and some nice praise from linebacker Jason Cabinda on the QB decision.

Captains named

Center Brian Gaia, and linebackers Brandon Bell and Von Walker were named as captains for the Nittany Lions this week. This is a first time for Gaia and Bell, and Walker’s second year at captain. Read more from Penn Live.

True freshmen greenlit

Coach Franklin also stated that at least 3 true freshmen have been “greenlit” to play this season: offensive lineman Connor McGovern, running back Miles Sanders and punter Blake Gillikin. Greenlit means they’re immediately activated to play. Read more from Centre Daily Times.

Of note: Michael Menet was named as a yellow shirt by Franklin, meaning no decision has been made yet regarding a redshirt for Menet, so it’s up in the air if we’ll see him on the field.

Offensive line is getting closer...

Veteran Andrew Nelson is set at right tackle, with Derek Dowrey at right guard, Brian Gaia at center, Ryan Bates at left guard, and Brendan Mahon at left tackle. Franklin stated he’s still moving parts around. With Connor McGovern being greenlit to play at the season opener, we could see him somewhere in the lineup. Franklin also praised the performance of Paris Palmer, Will Fries and Michal Menet (who took reps at left tackle in practice). Read more from Lions 24/7

Defensive tackle updates

Franklin said Curtis Cothran and Kevin Givens have done well moving from defensive ends to tackle positions, and will be in rotations that will likely include Parker Cothren, Antoine White and Robert Windsor. Read more from The Morning Call.

Behind the scenes practice videos

Penn State shared some great drill breakdown and “hype” videos of key positions at their Training Camp Central site.

The offensive line drill breakdown video features commentary and some nice blocking from offensive tackle Andrew Nelson.

Saquon Barkley shared how excited he is to be back at Beaver Stadium again, and showed some nice work on the field. We’re excited, too.

In the safeties practice video, see senior Malik Golden’s footwork.

Speaking of footwork, check out the wide receivers video, too.

Hear and see even more from the players

Joe Hermitt and Penn Live published some great pictures from this week’s camp.

Linebacker Jason Cabinda was featured in a Penn Live article, where he touched on the choice of McSorley for QB, and the focus for the defense this year (hint: turnovers).
