Freshman forward Joe Hampton, who recently joined the Nittany Lions basketball program, has decided to leave Penn State.

Hampton arrived in the early summer in order to take advantage of early workouts, as well as work through an injury he sustained during his senior season in high school. A promising prospect, Hampton committed to the Nittany Lions early, then decommitted, looked around, then committed again once he had weighed all his options.

The reason for Hampton’s departure is not immediately clear. Likewise, the impact his departure has on the team is not immediately apparent, as the chances that Hampton redshirted this season were increasingly likely the closer we got to the season.

This development opens up a scholarship for the Nittany Lions, and Pat Chambers may opt to fill the scholarship with a 2017 guy (or a grad transfer), or keep the scholarship in the back pocket to use in the 2018 class.

We wish Joe luck in his future endeavors!
