College football season is dead, long live college football season.
Despite the Rose Bowl loss, which you can now re-experience through the magic of Tecmo Bowl, Penn State topped ESPN’s B1G rankings to end the season. I hope everyone really savored this special year, because from now on, the Nittany Lions will have lofty expectations that they have otherwise been unbridled by the last several seasons. Penn State stands at 30-1 odds to win the National Championship next year. ESPN, Athlon Sports, and SB Nation have them in the top 5 of their first preseason rankings, while the Sporting News has them in the top 10. Multiple people at Campus Insiders predict the Nittany Lions to appear in the Playoff next season, one even going so far as to project a loss to Alabama in the National Championship game. We’ll get our first taste of what is to come at the Blue-White game April 22nd.
Palestra Extras: While we are appreciating things, let’s not gloss over what men’s basketball did this weekend at the Palestra in Philadelphia. Michigan State’s Tom Izzo was on the record saying that coaching in the 90-year old arena on his bucket list of things to do in his life and Pat Chambers was able to set up a mutually beneficial contest on Penn’s campus. Going into the game, MLive had a great article about why everyone should care about the Palestra.
Looking Ahead: Let’s not just get caught up simply looking back, there are so many sports that are yet to have their seasons in the spring semester—Highlighted by Penn State’s men’s lacrosse team which is ranked 15th and 16th in the preseason polls. Additionally, the Nittany Lion men’s Track & Field is ranked 20th entering their season, while the women’s squad is 43rd.
