Top ranked Penn State began the day with the injury withdrawal of leadoff man Nick Suriano at 125lbs. And then his teammates went on a tear.
Senior Jimmy Gulibon got things started by tech fall over #13 Javier Gasca (MSU), who had pinned Jimmy at Big Tens just 10 days ago. Gulibon used a head inside single to Gasca’s left (trail) leg - a shot we hadn’t seen much from Jimmy all season long. He scored 4 times with it, and his two-on-one tilt took care of the rest. Way to go, Jim.

Forgetting the injury to Suriano, Penn State wrestled very well. 8 for 8 with 6 bonus wins - we’ll take it. Okie State went 9-1, but #7 Kyle Crutchmer (174) suffered a huge upset, losing his opener to unseeded Jake Residori of SIUE, 6-5. Ohio State lost two of nine fights, with 125-Rodriguez and 165-Burcher heading into the consolation bracket.
OTHER UPSETS OF NOTE
The 157-lb bracket’s getting a rewrite. Five seeded wrestlers, including #6 Clayton Ream (NDSU) and #8 Jake Short (MINN) dropped their openers. Four seeded wrestlers from 197 also headed south, led by #9 Nathan Rotert (SDSU). #8 at 149 Pat Lugo (BORO) and #7 Joey Ward (UNC) were the only other top 8 seeded wrestlers to fall in the opening round (in addition to #7 Crutchmer, of course). All of the seeded wrestlers at 165 and 184 brackets stayed clean.
SESSION TWO MATCHES
After a short break in the action, Session 2 begins at 7pmET. Championship round 2 matches, plus the first round of consolations will go simultaneously. By the time this session ends, around 10pm ET, 90 of the 330 wrestlers will have been eliminated. Just less than a third of the field.
