The end of Penn State’s baseball season also marked the end of the 2016-17 sports season for the Nittany Lions, so for the next few months sports competition news will slow down some until things ramp up again in August. There’s no shortage of news in other areas, however.
Sports!
We’re hiring! - The Penn State Basketball program just posted an assistant coach position on its site, made in part by the recent reshuffling of the staff. Ross Condon will return to his previous position of Director of Basketball Operations, which leaves an assistant position open. The timing of the decision might be surprising given the coaching carrousel is just about settled, but let’s see who Chambers can bring in to help out.
Another late addition. - The basketball team also added another player in Taylor Nussbaum, a preferred walk-on from Cheshire Academy (CT). Nussbaum will add depth to the backcourt, currently composed of Tony Carr and Jamari Wheeler (as pure point guards).
They done did it again! - As pointed out yesterday by Colin, Pegula Ice Arena will once again be host to an NHL preseason game. This time, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres face off on September 19th, at 7 PM. Here’s to a yearly tradition!
Going pro in sports. - David Goodwin and Dylan Richard have signed contracts to play European Hockey for the 2017-18 season. Goodwin will be joining the Liiga-Saipa Oy (Finland), while Richard will go to the Manglerud Star (Norway).
The schedule is set. - The women’s field hockey team has finalized its 2017 schedule, which includes six NCAA tournament teams from last season. One of those teams is defending NCAA champion Delaware.
They Made it! - The National Women’s Volleyball team named Micha Hancock and Megan Courtney to the USA team for the upcoming Pan Am competition. Penn State, along with Oregon, Nebraska, and Illinois, were the only schools to have more than one member on the USA team.
In Other News...
Speaking of yearly traditions... - In what could become a regular occurrence, Blake Sheldon is set to host the first ever concert in Beaver Stadium. Audrey Snyder lists the remaining challenges (subscription required) ahead of the concert next month.
Take a deep dive. - GoPSUSports recently published an extended feature into the creation of the Generations of Greatness uniforms, where they go over the reason for not picking just one season. Check it out.
Keeping up with former players. - Tim Frazier and Talor Battle were both interviewed recently. Frazier at the Coaches vs Cancer reception, and Battle by BTN.com. Both are pretty good and worth a look.
That’s it for today!
