Former Foes Week Seven: Is Penn State Actually the Joe?

This week we add Sparty to the growing list of Lion slayers.

So much for cheering on chaos.

Guess it’s time to add Sparty to this (increasingly sad) list of Foes, Former.

2018 Former Foes

Appalachian State Mountaineers

Last Seen: Tuesday, Oct 9, de-smirking the Arkansas State Red Wolf, 35-9.

Next Up: Saturday, hosting the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns, 3:30p, on ESPN+

2018 Record: 4-1.

Pitt Panthers

Last Seen: Very nearly doing that Mediocre Pitt Team Knocks Off Top-10 Squad thing that Pitt likes to do, yet not quite pulling it off, and ultimately falling to Notre Dame 19-14.

For most of three quarters, Pitt held Irish QB Ian Book in check, picked him off twice and kept the Irish out of the end zone. A Qadree Ollison rushing TD and a 99-yard kickoff return TD by Maurice Ffrench (correct spelling) furnished a lead that Pitt held until less than six minutes remained. At that point, Book connected with Miles Boykin for a 35-yard touchdown and that was ballgame.

Next Up: After a bye week this week, Pitt hosts Duke on Oct 27 at 3:30p on RSN/ESPN3

2018 Record: 3-4.

Kent State Golden Flashes

Last Seen: Losing to Miami (OH), 31-6.

Woody Barrett scored a 7-yard rushing touchdown with 36 seconds remaining to avert a shutout.

Additionally, I’m sad to report a shocking dearth of Sean Lewis beard news on the interwebs this week.

Next Up: Saturday, hosting Akron, 3:30p, on ESPN+.

2018 Record: 1-6.

Illinois Fighting Illini

Last Seen: Catching a couple head-to-knees from growing playground bully Purdue, 46-7.

AJ Bush ran in for a TD with 8:07 left in the first quarter, and then Illinois never scored again. He did get sacked four times though. And completed 12 passes!

Next Up: Saturday, traveling to Camp Randall for a noon kickoff against the Badgers, on FS1.

2018 Record: 3-3.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Last Seen: Saturday, outlasting Minnesota at home, 30-14.

Minnesota rowed their way to two first half touchdowns, and had the lead twice during, but Dwayne Haskins and KJ Hill eventually wore them down and closed them out deep, with two second half touchdowns.

Next Up: Saturday, traveling to Purdue, 7:30p, on ABC. Could be worth checking this one?

2018 Record: 7-0.

Michigan State Spartans

Last Seen: Saturday, doing all sorts of nasty things to our Nittany Lions, before exiting with one of thee ugliest W’s you ever will see, 21-17.

There were so many plays...ugh, moving on.

Next Up: Saturday, hosting ascendant Michigan, 12p, on FOX.

2018 Record: 4-2.

Former Bros

Mississippi State Bulldogs

Former Penn State Assistant and all-around likeable bro, Joe Moorhead, is now the Head Coach at MSU. We’ll follow his progress here this season too.

Last Seen: Last Saturday, ruining Auburn’s fleeting playoff hopes, 23-9.

The Bulldogs had a bye week this past week.

Next Up: Saturday, at #5 LSU, 7p, on ESPN.

2018 Record: 4-2.

Next Up: Saturday, at Kent State, 3:30p, on ESPN+.

2018 Record: 2-2.
