Preview: Jackson State University

My goal is to provide more coverage of the Penn State Men's Basketball program and also...World Domination. Now, I'm sure that the world is safe, for the time being, so I'll set my sites on Monday evenings opponent, Jacksonville State. I want to know who to watch out for tomorrow night. First I'll discuss Jacksonville's game against Samford. Who???

Jacksonville State lost it's Friday night opener against the Samford Bulldogs, in Alabama. Samford currently sits atop the Southern Conference standings, along with 2-0 Furman. The score of the JSU game was 92 to 72. Reading the game synopsis, (this is top-notch reporting here, folks) Samford went on a 22-5 run and held the Gamecocks,( Jacksonville State), to 39% from the field.

JSU plays in the Ohio Valley Conference. The PSU game will be their second game of the season. I'll go through their top double-digit scorers, from Friday night.

  1. #14 Jason Burrell - Jason is a 6'7 Senior Forward, and he scored 16 points to lead JSU, in their opener. Last season, Jason led his team in free throw attempts at 99. He converted on 78 of them, so he's reliable from the charity stripe. He played 30 minutes and shot 40% from the field (4-10).
  2. #31 Christian Cunningham - Mr. Cunningham is JSU's leading shot blocker. He had 4 stuffs, on Friday, along with 7 rebounds and he scored 10 points. He converted 80% of his free throws, going 4/5, at Samford. He has a 6'7 frame and he is also a Senior. Christian played 31 minutes, on Friday.
  3. #4 Ty Hudson - Ty is a 6'1" redshirt Junior guard. He played 28 minutes, scored 13 points and 2 each assists and steals. In high school, Ty was a four star prospect, as ranked by ESPN.
  4. #23 Marlon Hunter - He is a 6'3" Senior guard. He played 19 minutes, shot 6/10 from the field, made 1/3, from 3 and had two steals to go along with his 13 points, Friday night. Marlon was a 3 star Rivals.com recruit in high school.

These four players are the only double digit scorers. Two players on their roster scored 5 points.

TAKEAWAYS

Well, this team is loaded with Seniors and anything can happen in basketball. These kids could come into the BJC and shoot the lights out. With Seniors, you have a core group of players that can get it together on any given night. BUT...the Ohio Valley Conference is not the Big Ten. On paper, the JSU's 6'7 forward, Jason Burrell looks interesting because this guy likes to get to the line, so he tries to create scoring opportunities. I imagine coach Chambers will put Josh Reaves, on this guy to keep him in check. Lamar Stevens should get the shot blocker Cunningam. These two opposing players look to be the only size this team has. What I'm most interested in, will be the guard play.

Jacksonville has a Senior and a red shirt Junior, at guard. If Coach Chambers plays man to man, the PSU Freshman may be tested. At the very least, it'll be interesting to see how they handle any pressure these two experienced guards can put on them.

PREDICTION

I'm not Carnac the Magnificent, (Johnny Carson reference- showing my age), but I'm expecting another dominant performance by the Lions. I'm looking for defensive improvements over the first game...holding the Gamecocks to the sixty-ish point total. What I would sincerely like is if we come out and dominate so bad, Pat clears the bench and DK gets some minutes. I'd like to see him in action. PSU wins handily. Then on to Cancun!!! (I'm not going...will have to watch it on the tube.. : (
