Black Shoe Degenerates: Week 12

The week of the trap game

NCAA Football: Michigan at Indiana Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to Week 12 of Black Shoe Degenerates, your weekly gambling column written by the smartest gambling expert you know.

This weekend... woof. I’d honestly take it easy if you’re actually betting real money. Between the fact that everything is a “trap game” and that there just aren’t many inspiring matchups, it’s going to be hard to predict. But, if you just have the itch to gamble, make all of these picks below and make some money.

Before we get into this week’s slate, let’s take a look back and review last week’s performance.

Last week’s picks:

ARob’s week 10: 6-1 (40-34-2 this season)

  • West Virginia -12 (win)
  • Penn State -9 and under 55 (win, win)
  • Michigan -39.5 (loss)
  • Northwestern +10.5 (win)
  • Washington State -6 (win)
  • Clemson -19.5 (win)

The closest I can come to a perfect week, and RUTGERS screws it up. That makes so much sense... ugh.

This week’s picks:

#14 Penn State at Rutgers, noon

My pick: Penn State -28 and under 50

Rutgers is going to pay for ruining my perfect week. It’s been 218 minutes and 28 seconds of game time since the Scarlet Knights have scored a touchdown — or, at kickoff, it will officially be four years, two months, three days, 14 hours, and 57 minutes. I expect that to go another year.

#9 West Virginia at Oklahoma State, 3:30 p.m.

My pick: West Virginia -5

Everyone is saying this could be a trap game for my Mountaineers. I don’t think it will be. Will Grier and Dana Holgorson will have this team ready, and the team will make plenty of fart noises afterwards in the general direction of Mike Gundy.

Indiana at #4 Michigan, 4 p.m.

My pick: Indiana +28.5

This isn’t because I think Indiana is any good, or because I think Michigan will look past the Hoosiers towards next week. I just don’t think the Wolverines will show that much on offense, or play their starters late in the game. Jim Harbaugh will try to get his team as much rest as possible before the Ohio State game and probable Big Ten championship.

Kansas at #6 Oklahoma, 7:30 p.m.

My pick: Kansas +36

This just makes sense. The line is way too big. Kyler Murray and Oklahoma’s offense are just awesome, but the Sooner defense can’t stop a nosebleed. The Jayhawks won’t come close, but 36 is too much — especially with the extra point added. At 35 I’d probably back off, but 36 makes it enticing.

Rice at #7 LSU, 7:30 p.m.

My pick: Under 52

This is the exact opposite of the Oklahoma game. LSU’s defense is awesome, and Rice has a chance to get shut out. LSU’s offense is just dreadful, and won’t put up 40+ points. This seems easy.
