Big Ten Preview and BSD Challenge - Week 12

The finish line is in sight

With just two weeks to go, we have our Big Ten West champ locked up. Realistically just two teams survive in the East vying for Indianapolis, but there are others still playing, hoping for chaos. Read on, make your own picks, and see if you know better than the masthead!

#10 Ohio State (9-1, 6-1) at Maryland (5-5, 3-4)

College Park, MD

Saturday, November 17th, 12:00 PM

Line: OSU -17

Were it not for Maryland’s quarterback being injured, I’d be tempted to take the Terrapins for this one. That being the case, however, and I have to think that Ohio State will just suffocate the Terps on defense, and cover fairly easily.

Ohio State 35, Maryland 7

Michigan State (6-4, 4-3) at Nebraska (3-7, 2-5)

Lincoln, NE

Saturday, November 17th, 12:00 PM

Line: MSU -1.5

I have a weird feeling about this game. Michigan State’s forte is to muddy the game against an opponent, pull them down into the muck, and then somehow emerge victorious. Don’t mud wrestle Dantonio, is what I’m saying. But Nebraska is suddenly resurgent, and they’re playing at home. I’ll go out on a limb here and say the Cornhuskers actually get the win.

Nebraska 28, Michigan State 24

#22 Northwestern (6-4, 6-1) at Minnesota (5-5, 2-5)

Minneapolis, MN

Saturday, November 17th, 12:00 PM

Line: NW -3

Big Ten West Northwestern just doesn’t sound right, but here we are. While I’d like to think that the Wildcats would take it easy, as they’ve already clinched a berth, this is college football, where every win matters. Minnesota has been very uneven, and I don’t think they can play consistently enough to defeat the Fightin’ Fitzes.

Northwestern 21, Minnesota 17

Iowa (6-4, 4-3) at Illinois (4-6, 2-5)

Champaign, IL

Saturday, November 17th, 3:30 PM

Line: IOWA -16

Iowa fans have to be looking back just a few weeks ago and imagining what could have been this season. That being said, Illinois is a pretty good get-right kind of game, and I think the Hawkeyes exploit it.

Iowa 42, Illinois 14

Wisconsin (6-4, 4-3) at Purdue (5-5, 4-3)

West Lafayette, IN

Saturday, November 17th, 3:30 PM

Line: PUR -6

If you’re a Penn State fan and feel bad about the season, just ponder Wisconsin for a bit. Preseason top 5 team, who has struggled with injuries, but has still inexplicably lost more games than they should have, and are currently unranked. Things could be worse! ....And they do get worse, as they head to Purdue and get stomped.

Purdue 35, Wisconsin 21

Indiana (5-5, 2-5) at #4 Michigan (9-1, 7-0)

Ann Arbor, MI

Saturday, November 17th, 4:00 PM

Line: MICH -27.5

I would love nothing more than for Team Chaos to show up and wreck Michigan’s season, but I’m having a hard time visualizing it. Unlike years past, Indiana doesn’t quite have the offensive firepower to really hang with a team like Michigan. However, the point spread is a bit too much for my liking; I’ll take the Wolverines to win, but not to cover.

Michigan 42, Indiana 21

BSD Challenge

For this week, check out the staff’s picks below. For the record, the line used for the Penn State-Rutgers game was PSU -26.5. The masthead was unanimous for two games:

  • Penn State -26.5 over Rutgers
  • Ohio State -17 over Maryand

That leaves five games up for grabs:

The majority of the masthead like Nebraska over Michigan State, while most favor the Wildcats to continue their drive to Indianapolis. Only Tim is giving Illinois a chance against Iowa, while I’m the lone wolf picking Purdue to put the nail in the coffin for Wisconsin’s season. Lastly, a slim majority of the writers think Indiana will hang around with Michigan.

What do you think, dear reader? Who ya got in week twelve?
