Penn State forward Mike Watkins appears to be ready to return to the hardwood. On Monday afternoon, Penn State head coach Pat Chambers announced that the Philadelphia native would be a game-time decision for Tuesday’s game against #13 Virginia Tech.
The redshirt junior has been out for the Nittany Lions as he has dealt with personal issues while also trying to meet the standards set forth by Penn State and the basketball coaching staff for him to return. In October, Watkins wrote a piece for The Black Cager regarding his mental health struggles.
Watkins has been no stranger to controversy throughout his Penn State career, including being arrested and charged with disorderly conduct just three days before his article was published on The Black Cager. It was his second legal run-in of the year as he was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia in March.
Once Watkins returns to the court, he’ll provide a key piece to the Nittany Lions on both ends of the court. Last season, he averaged 12.1 points and 8.9 rebounds. He also averaged 2.3 blocks per game last season.
The Nittany Lions and Hokies will tip off tomorrow night at Bryce Jordan Center at 7 p.m. and can be watched on ESPN2.
