Mike Watkins Out Indefinitely For Penn State Basketball

The star forward will not play in today’s exhibition game against West Virginia and there is no timetable set for his return.

Yesterday, it was reported by Mark Brennan at Lions247 that Mike Watkins would be out indefinitely from playing in games for Penn State basketball. PSU’s athletic department also released the following statement:

While this is undoubtedly a huge blow to the Nittany Lions’ front court and subsequently, their postseason aspirations given how Watkins was clearly the team’s biggest threat down low on defense (some of us call him ‘Mike Swatkins’ for a reason), it is not unexpected considering his recent off-court troubles and his coming out with a wonderfully-written blog post about his struggles with mental illness.

There is no timetable for Mike’s return, so it will be up to Pat Chambers and his staff to decide when they feel he has made enough progress off the court to justify him playing in games again. Needless to say, we here at BSD wish Mike all of the best and hope to him suiting up for the Blue and White on the court again as soon as possible.

Penn State will face West Virginia in Morgantown for a special exhibition game to raise money for the Red Cross’ hurricane relief efforts. That game tips off at 12:00 PM ET and can be seen on a live stream via CBS Sports’ website.
