Big Ten Preview and BSD Challenge - Week 11

The mad dash to the end is upon us!

With three weeks to go, there are a lot of key games to determine who will head to Indianapolis. The teams on top will look to cement their status, while those looking up will want to play spoiler. Read on, make your own picks, and see if you know better than the masthead!

#10 Ohio State (8-1, 5-1) at #18 Michigan State (6-3, 4-2)

East Lansing, MI

Saturday, November 10th, 12:00 PM

Line: OSU -3.5

If this game were in Columbus, I’d have much more confidence in the Buckeyes. Ohio State just hasn’t looked all that solid, despite their record. Unfortunately, Michigan State is super injured. Like, a lot. I think the Buckeyes have enough in them to get past Sparty.

Ohio State 28, Michigan State 17

Illinois (4-5, 2-4) at Nebraska (2-7, 1-5)

Lincoln, NE

Saturday, November 10th, 12:00 PM

Line: NEB -18

Now if this isn’t a weird game, I don’t know what is. Nebraska hung tough with Ohio State, while Illinois - of all teams - dropped 55 points on Minnesota. I’m thinking this is a fairly close game, and I’m having some trouble seeing Nebraska covering.

Nebraska 35, Illinois 24

Maryland (5-4, 3-3) at Indiana (4-5, 1-5)

Bloomington, IN

Saturday, November 10th, 12:00 PM

Line: IND -3

Okay, I have it sorted out - Maryland just dislikes the forward pass. Just put 9 dudes in the box (TWSS) and you win. Indiana’s defense is pretty good, so I’m thinking the Hoosiers take this one.

Indiana 28, Maryland 13

#4 Michigan (8-1, 6-0) at Rutgers (1-8, 0-6)

Piscataway, NJ

Saturday, November 10th, 3:30 PM

Line: MICH -39

Have you ever seen such symmetry before? 8-1 vs 1-8! 6-0 vs 0-6! It’s beautiful!

Michigan 56, Rutgers 3

Northwestern (5-4, 5-1) at #21 Iowa (6-3, 3-3)

Iowa City, IA

Saturday, November 10th, 3:30 PM

Line: IOWA -10

In probably the best example of a sneaky good game, Northwestern actually currently holds the lead for the Big Ten West. Just like we all predicted to start the season. Actually, I’m 99% sure in one of the off-season mailbags I said Northwestern was my darkhorse for the West, so booyah who knows what he’s talking about? This guy! As for the game itself, Iowa probably wins it, but 10 points seems like a lot.

Iowa 27, Northwestern 21

Purdue (5-4, 4-2) at Minnesota (4-5, 1-5)

Minneapolis, MN

Saturday, November 10th, 3:30 PM

Line: PUR -12.5

Talk about teams trending in opposite directions. Minnesota started the year fairly well, but have face planted - their most recent loss saw them give up 55 points to Illinois. Not great! I’ll go with the Boilermakers to cover this one.

Purdue 42, Minnesota 21

BSD Challenge

We are now three quarters of the way through the season, I think it’s about time for an update on just how the writers are doing.

Let’s get this disclaimer up front - whatever you do, do NOT entrust any of the writers with gambling money. They are really, really bad at it.

With just three weeks left to go, exactly ONE writer is batting over .500 - yours truly! That’s right, the idiot savant leads the way. I currently hold a three-game lead over Dlando, who in turn holds a three-game lead over Tim. It’s ugly, my friends.

As for this week, check out the staff’s picks below. For the record, the line used for the Penn State-Wisconsin game was PSU -8. The masthead was unanimous for two games:

  • Ohio State -3.5 over Michigan State
  • Michigan -39 over Rutgers

That leaves five games up for grabs:

Most of the writers think Wisconsin will stay within striking distance of Penn State, while there’s a fairly even split between Illinois and Nebraska - oh, how far Big Red has fallen. Similarly, Indiana-Maryland is seen as a tossup.

Somewhat surprisingly, most of the staff thinks Iowa will not cover against Northwestern. Lastly, the Gophers are being given a fighting chance against the Boilermakers.

What do you think, dear reader? Who ya got in week eleven?
