Black Shoe Degenerates: Week 11

This season is going by too damn fast.

Welcome to Week 11 of Black Shoe Degenerates, your weekly gambling column written by the smartest gambling expert you know.

I just wanted to use this space to recognize Wally Triplett. I got to meet him briefly when he came to a Penn State practice in 2015, and I’ll remember that forever. Even at his old age, he captured the room from the second he walked in. Not many have had the impact on this program, and the sport as a whole on the collegiate and professional levels, that Triplett had. I hope Penn State recognizes him this weekend, and honestly, I would consider retiring his jersey if I were in the athletic department and in charge of those decisions. Thanks for everything you did for the program, Wally. Rest in peace. We Are.

Before we get into this week’s slate, let’s take a look back and review last week’s performance.

Last week’s picks:

ARob’s week 10: 3-4 (34-33-2 this season)

  • Nebraska/Ohio State under 73 (win)
  • Oklahoma State -7.5 (loss)
  • West Virginia +2 (win)
  • Kentucky +9.5 (loss)
  • Penn State +10.5 (LOL)
  • Notre Dame -9.5 (win)
  • LSU +14.5 (loss)
  • Pat’s lock of the week: Ohio State -18.5 (loss, 3-6 on the season)

We Are... still above .500 on the year. The games I lost, I lost big. Oklahoma State lost straight up, and Penn State, Kentucky, and LSU all got blown out. Those boys down in West Virginia, though, they can play some football. How exciting was that win in Austin? They’re going to need a wheelbarrow to carry Dana Holgorsen’s cojones around on the sidelines.

This week’s picks:

TCU at #9 West Virginia, noon

My pick: West Virginia -12

I’m just falling in love with the Mountaineers. I don’t know. I love Will Grier — his throw on West Virginia’s game-winning touchdown last week is honestly one of the best throws I’ve ever seen. Plus, like I said above, Dana Holgorsen is the GOAT. Let’s goooooooo Mountaineers (clap clap).

Wisconsin at #20 Penn State, noon

My pick: Penn State -9 AND under 55

Everything (at least in my head) says to pick Penn State. Wisconsin is 2-7 against the spread. It has a backup QB. It’s rush defense isn’t stellar. The Nittany Lions are coming off a humiliating loss and returning home, where it should be able to bounce back. Despite all of that, it still makes me uncomfortable to actually write it. We’ll see how it goes, but either way, a Penn State/under 55 parlay might be a smart move.

#4 Michigan at Rutgers, 3:30 p.m.

My pick: Michigan -39.5

Have you seen Michigan? And have you seen Rutgers? Yeah.

Northwestern at Iowa, 3:30 p.m.

My pick: Northwestern +10.5

I don’t know why, but I just feel like this is Northwestern’s year. College football is weird. Iowa has also lost two heartbreakers in a row, and it’ll be tough to bounce back from that against a really good team.

#8 Washington State at Colorado, 3:30 p.m.

My pick: Washington State -6

I like Washington State, and I feel like only six points is too small. Bill Connelly’s S&P+ says this is an 11.5 point game, and that makes way more sense. Take the value, and give the points.

#2 Clemson at #17 Boston College, 8 p.m.

My pick: Clemson -19.5

This is Clemson’s biggest regular-season test remaining, and I think the players know this. College Gameday will be there, it’ll be a packed house... but the Tigers have done this before. They’re going to roll.
