Big Ten Wrestling Standings: Crunch Time

It’s crunch time, friends. Penn State is your dual champs. One last non-conference dual before the post season starts. Let’s take a look at B1Gs.

Team Projections, Without Bonus

Team Points Before Bonus
PSU 136.5
OHST 123.0
MICH 106.0
IOWA 93.0
ILL 68.5
NEB 61.5

As noted everywhere, that’s without any bonus points, and assuming every wrestler finishes as seeded below. It also includes 2-seed Jason Nolf.

Bids: 8, 9, or 10. Piotrowski and Oliver have been on losing streaks, making the picture both cloudy and messy for our guy Carson Kuhn.

Rising: Rayvon Foley, MSU

Falling: Drew Mattin, MICH. Went oh-fer the weekend.

Missing: Suriano sat out the match vs Lizak.

Our Guy: if it’s 10 bids, Carson needs to win twice at B1Gs. If it’s 8 bids, he has to win at least 3. On the other hand, if it’s 9 or 10 bids, then the whole bracket gets seeded, 1 thru 14 - and Carson probably draws Tomasello or Rivera in the first round, which is a tough match up. If it’s only 8 bids, that stinks - but only the top 8 get seeded, and the bottom 6 are drawn randomly. Maybe that gets him a winnable first round match?

Either way, we’ll know more after this weekend - and we’ll also get a much better idea about Carson, when he faces Buffalo’s Akin, who scored 3.5 points at last year’s NCAA tournament, in part because he received a first round default win over Nick Suriano. (cue Dennis Hopper from Apocalypse Now).

Bids: 6 or 7

Rising: Stevan Micic (MICH). Mitch McKee (MINN) completed a wild comeback on Delvecchio (RUT)

Falling: Pletcher (OHST) got mauled by Micic.

Our Guy: great job from Corey, putting away Paul Glynn convincingly last Saturday night. One more big match this weekend, vs a top 10-ish kid in Buffalo’s Bryan Lantry. That would fill the “quality win” category should an at-large bid become necessary.

Bids: 8 - 10. Gasca and Profaci are hanging by a thread. And that thread’s name is “Coaches don’t have time to rank wrestlers with any accuracy”.

Rising: Mikey Carr (ILL, via South Fayette, PA)

Falling: Tommy Guns Thorn (MIN). Tommy got decked by Ryan Diehl (UMD), and almost assuredly will fall to the 4- or 5-seed, on McKenna’s half of the bracket - which is great.

Our Guy: let’s hope for 8 bids, so that Nick Lee might draw a first round opponent he can bonus.

Bids: 8, but Steve Bleise (MINN) needs to get back on the mat to keep what figures to be a bid.

Rising / Falling: n/a. This weight’s been relatively fixed since early January.

Our Guy: with only 8 bids, there’s a chance Zain can draw a first round opponent rather than a bye. That’s good for PSU.

Rising: Pantaleo (MICH) proved CKLV was no fluke by walloping Mick Jordan (OHST) again.

Falling: Mick has some good matchups in the field, and some not-so-good matchups.

Our Guy: Jason gets two more weeks to heal. How he gets seeded will remain a mystery. If he’s healthy, no coach wants Nolf lower than 2. If he’s injured, only the coach of the 7-seed wants him at 2.

Rising: Alex Marinelli (IOWA)

Falling: Our Little Meatball

Our Guy: Ultimately, the failed trip / body lock (depending upon your rooting interests) probably benefits our guy Cenzo. He certainly looked like the better wrestler for the first 6 minutes - something even Hawk fans would have to concede. But that 7th minute, 6-point move still counts, and consequently Cenzo will start no higher than the 3-seed at B1Gs. Also, thanks to VaTech’s David McFadden, Cenzo’s performance at B1Gs will determine which half of the bracket he lands at NCAAs. 1- thru 4-seeds are all possibilities.

Rising: Myles Amine (MICH) got over the Bo Jordan hump, and Dylan Lydy (PUR) beat Johnny Sebastian (NW).

Falling: see above, plus Chris Pfarr (MINN).

Our Guy: this sets up perfectly for Mark. 8 bids affords a potential first round match. Amine and Jordan are on the bottom half. And he’s bonused both of his seeded semi-final match-ups, Lydy and Sebastian.

Rising: Adam Coon (MICH) beat Kyle Snyder, and it was no fluke either.

Falling: Sam Stoll (IOWA) falls down when he attempts a single leg shot. Granted - that almost never happens. But it did one time last Saturday.

Our Guy: with his win over Stoll, Nick grabs the 3-seed, which gives him Shawn Streck (PUR) in the quarters, rather than Stoll or Hemida (UMD).
